Girls' Puberty + Periods (Year 6)

Puberty, Periods, and the Human Life Cycle: Understanding girls' puberty and how the changes we experience fit into the greater human life cycle.

This one-hour lesson is designed for students in UKS2 (specifically for Year 6, though it is also suitable for Year 7). The lesson recaps students' previous knowledge regarding the changes girls commonly experience during puberty (Year 4/5) before providing a wider context of how adolescence and puberty fit into the greater human life cycle.

Created with progression in mind, the students will learn about the menstrual cycle in greater detail than previously covered, before embarking on a scavenger hunt to discover a range of different period products, how they are used, and some pros and cons for each. While this lesson references pregnancy and the fact that mammals must mate to reproduce (Year 5 science curriculum), it does not discuss or reference sexual intercourse.
